When life gives you a buncha test skirts...

Current Mood : Mild frustration

OK, so today was just ridiculous. Sewed another paper-towel skirt, with the new alterations, and it’s still too big. Um…if I take the changes down any further, it’ll be back to where it was *before*  I altered it, and that didn’t close over the doll’s butt. Made another adjustment and another skirt…now I have no idea what’s going on.

Decided to try again, but this time, I was gonna use some fabric. Stuff I claimed from the rag pile, pieces of what used to be an oxford-style men’s shirt. Used the same pattern from today’s first effort – and it fit just fine. What the…? I guess the paper toweling stretches a lot when I sew on it. Hmpft. Just to make sure, I made a second skirt – and it came out fine.

Well, when life gives you a box of test skirts…you make a bizarre dress out of ‘em. Right now, the ‘blouse skirt’ is just pinned to Lagoona (the skirt-skirt has Velcro ™ already), but I should have closures sewn shortly. Yeah, it’s kinda weird, but I rather like it. It was fun to play with lace, and note that, in two places, it was gathered wrong at the factory, not at my machine, but it really covers a truly awful skirt-skirt hem.

Otherwise, today was a nice one. I got to visit two yard sales – nothin’ interesting, just a ton of infant/toddler girl clothes at both – and Mal-Wart. The MH section is wiped out once again. Ah, well. At least I got a calendar on the way to me !

I actually sent dolls away today !

Current Mood : Weary

You’ll laugh at what I did today. I bought a 2012 calendar ! With all the eBay buying we did for Dearest Son and Beloved Hubby over the past couple months, not to mention my own ‘five buck’ auction wins, we had a nice chunk of eBay Bucks to spend.  I went round and round, trying to figure out how best to spend those Bucks – get the biggest bang, so to speak. I looked at shoes (MH, Hi Glamm, Stardoll, Moxie Teenz) and clothes, stickers and crafts, and just about everything, but nothing seemed really…unexpected and fun, ya know ?

Then, yes, I found a Monster High calendar for just some change above the Bucks, and thought, ‘Yeah ! I’d get to enjoy it all year, save the images for later, and it won’t cost much at all !’. So I hit Buy It Now, and a $12. calendar I could never find locally is on its way to me, almost free. Sure, I ‘lost’ three months waiting so long, but it’s not like I won’t enjoy the rest, and I have plans for all the images. It was a little over half-off, too. So, I’m happy.

I got an invitation to join the BlogHer Visionaries group, so I looked into it. And refused. It sounded good, I’d get surveys and be eligible to win stuff (I never do, but the hope is eternal…), and may even gain a wider audience for my rants and raves about Monster High dolls, but the whole ‘we own everything you write and will be your sole agent if there’s ever money exchanged’ bit of the Terms And Conditions just put me off. I’d rather make no money at all and keep things as-is than bust my butt for some company and only get what they decide to throw to me. Shoot, a good chunka my life is already promised to Disney, and that was for the privilege to work in one of their retail outlets almost 20 years ago. Can’t be givin’ away much more, or I won’t have any left for us ! (grin)

Oh, and I sold my ‘Becky’ doll ! Got the nod from Amazon, and she went to her new home in California today. Yaay ! I hope she and J. are happy for decades together. After postage and such, I got back about what we paid for her, which is about as good as it gets. I’d make eager, gleeful plans about how to spend the money, but instead, I’m just putting it back in the family general fund. I’ll spend it soon enough on dolls, one way or another, and maybe the next one, I won’t feel so guilty over.

I also redressed Gloom Beach Cleo and gave her to Dearest’s Friend H., since she doesn’t have one. She was so overjoyed, I felt honored to have done so. It’s great when giving away a doll is as thrilling as getting one !

With all that and some Dearest drama, I didn’t get to sew. But I have hope for tomorrow !

Poor Lagoona, stuck wearin' a paper towel...Well, that's life at Chez Insanity !

Current Mood : Satisfied.

More rain today, but I was pretty healthy for a change ! So was Dearest Son, but we both fell sound asleep watching Super Troopers after lunch anyway. Even Beloved Hubby wasn’t free from the effect of Spring rain – he zonked out about a half-hour after a long day of school in the morning and work in the afternoon. Slept for two hours, but it’s good, he plans to stay up to study. I wondered if it was considered staying up late if he did it nearly every night. He lobbed an eraser at me. Hmpft.

As for me, it was room-cleaning day, and I got all the trash out. And I redid my thread storage yet again, because…I got the brown thread box I wanted. I found one at a decent price, not chipped or ridiculously expensive for ‘vintage’, and snagged it. I took a solid hour of fun, organizing all the colors yet again. I had too many blues and greens to fit in the green box, so I made bobbins of the four half-empty small spools. They come in handy when bobbin thread doesn’t matter, or for projects like pattern fittings, and bobbining ‘em frees up fun spools to play with. Dearest likes them as pirate barrels, and they even float in the sink.

Speaking of pattern fittings, I decided to go ahead and sew that Bratz-origin halter dress again, with the new changes I drafted. And, since I’ve used all of two sheets of that good paper toweling…that’s the fabric I went with today. Unfortunately, I used the sheet that got wadded up during all the moving around, so the dress came out very wrinkled.

Since she’s so new, she was still on my Arena desk, Skull Shores Lagoona got tapped for her first go as fitting model. I love her shoes ! Went OK, the skirt is now too wide, and I wanna tailor the fit of that bodice a bit more, but on the whole, I’m pleased with the changes I made. I’ve already re-re-drafted it, so version 2.1 should be launched soon.

Hope you don’t mind that the back’s being held closed by safety pins. No way am I gonna hand-sew snaps on a paper garment I’m just gonna toss tomorrow. I am getting better at keeping my hands steady for no-flash photography. Monster High dolls have various paint and effects that drive flashes nutz, so I try to use available light instead. I love my new lamp !

(singing) "Isn't she looo-ve-ly ? Isn't she won-der-ful...?"

Current Mood : Happy and achy.

Look at what Beloved Hubby got me ! I’ve always thought this particular Lagoona was lovely, but I’d only seen promo photos – heck, the Mal-Wart I last went to didn’t even have tags on the shelves, much less any dolls. But when he heard I wasn’t feeling well, he picked up a few things, including this lovely, sweet, beautiful Lagoona ! I swear, the first time I saw her, I thought she looked like Olivia Newton-John, and even now, every time I look at her, I hear ‘I Honestly Love You’ in my head. And you know what a total sucker I am for 80s-wear. Was there anything I wouldn’t love about this doll ? (smile)

He said he went to the same Mal-Wart I did, and they’d just stocked the shelves Friday. The person he spoke with – who was stocking Barbie – said they’d just gotten in after months of no dolls at all, and a shopper  who was there while she was putting them out scooped up every one of ‘those black and white dolls’ in one grab. She felt a bit bad about that, she told him, because they’d been marked at just $4.13, and she was hoping a buncha kids would get them. But we all know it was probably a scalper. While I paid quite a bit more than four bucks for my greyscale Skull Shores Frankie Stein, I don’t regret it. It was within a few bucks of the normal price of the dolls, and it’s not like I stood a chance at getting one of the cheaper ones.

I had a vicious, painful stomach ache last night, felt like I was getting shivved from the inside. I’d go back to sleep and dream of pain, then wake up, clutching my oversized gut. It went away sometime in the early morning, around 6am or so, and I locked the door behind it with a big gulp of that nasty pink stuff. Then I dozed off and on all day. I think I needed it. Dearest Son checked up on me throughout, even though he’s still getting over a cold/allergies himself, and he made sure I had cold water for the prescripts I always hafta take. My getting-big sweetie…

I had zero interest in eating. But in addition to still being sore, my stomach was doing some serious, Hamlet-level orating, so I gave it some buttered crackers to shut up. When it did OK with those, I munched on some raw cauliflower and a bit of ham. Seems to be holding fine.

It was a really good day to be sick. We had a massive thunderstorm start last night, with some beautiful lightning strikes I got to see from the porch. It rained off and on all day, with birds filling the air during the brief dry periods. I heard wrens, jays, grackles, and others, amid trains, freight trucks, and dogs. But I most enjoyed just the sound of rain on leaves, on the windowsill, on Twilight Sparkle, and the wet earth. Tends to put me to sleep, though !

And I also got to enjoy my day-late library books, finally finishing The Good, The Bad, and the Barbie, by starting over from the beginning. So here’s my review. If you’ve ever read one of the ‘adult culture study’ Barbie books, like Forever Barbie or Barbie Chronicles, don’t spend yer cash on this one. It heavily quotes both, and several others. Most of the photos aren’t anything original or new, and the text is more of the same you’ve already read elsewhere, from an author that dares to have his/her own opinion, and those books were all written at least ten years ago. This volume’s author, Tanya Lee Stone, can’t be said to really have an opinion, which makes me wonder why she got the nod to write the book. I’d assume it’s another puff piece authorized by Mattel – it also heavily quotes Barbie and Ruth – but the credits say otherwise. So I really don’t know why this book exists, unless it’s for those who haven’t found Forever Barbie or Barbie Chronicles yet.

I’ve already removed pretty Lagoona from her packaging and posed her for photos. Wow. She really is a gorgeous doll. Beloved told me they had her, a SS Ghoulia, two SS DracuLauras, and a Sweet 1600 DLaura, but nothing else. Still, it gives me hope that we’re not totally forgotten here in the doll desert !

I have 5 pairs of shoes. The MH Ghouls....I've lost count at 52 last year...

Current Mood : Quiet

I got the accompanying 'Vampire' shoes from the MH Create A Monster kit off eBay, again just for a couple bucks, and was astounded at how good they looked with the 'de-snitched' outfit. So I took Lagoona's picture again, this time with an old Barbie backdrop I found at a thrift store for a quarter. It was out because Beloved needed the cheap art portfolio I had it stored in, and I kinda shrugged and said 'what the heck'. I didn't realize I had it at such a weird angle...

Didn't get to sew yesterday, but I did today - and you get the photos tomorrow ! Operetta looks great in a slim skirt. If ya sell me a doll in pants, I'll make her a dress or skirt, first thing. Put her in a dress, I'll have her in jeans the day after I take her outta the box. It's just the way I roll. The simple 'four-dart half-hour ~ forty-five minutes, tops' skirt took me about an hour. It'd been so long since I made one, I wanted to take my time. Plus, I learned a few new finishing tricks since the last one, and I wanted to try 'em out. Went OK. Skirt really looks good with her issue blouse. But darn near any doll can benefit from having a black pencil skirt in her wardrobe. Except maybe the guy dolls...and even then, some of 'em really do have the legs for it !

I tried it on my broken armed Ghoulia for fittings...and wouldn't you know it, the glue's not holding. So, while I had KJ out, I sewed up a simple tube of elastic to at least hold the arm together. So now, she has an arm brace that looks like sporting equipment or a white ACE bandage for a strain. Can always say she hurt her elbow skating... or CLEPing out of her first year of University. Those essay tests'll kill ya ! You get the photo of that on Thursday.

And it occurred to me that I had to break the plastic protection off that cone of black thread to use it - so while KJ was out, I also made a little drawstring cone cozy. It's funny, but years ago, I bought some white cone thread, and made a 'cool cats' on black fabric cozy for it when I noticed it was getting dusty on top. Today, without thinking, I decided to use some white fabric with cats on it. So now I have a white thread cone in a mostly-black cozy, and a black thread cone in a mostly-white cozy. Too bad they're too widely different sizes, or I'd swap 'em out. Guess I could take photos of them for Friday...

Or not. I hope to have some other goodies sewn by then. I wanna make something new for Cupid, and poor Gil is still wearing his issue clothes ! Yikes. I really gotta pay some more attention to the fellas.

I love Cupid ! Her Dad gave me the bestest husband, after all...

Current Mood : Whimsical

(sigh) Mattel, Mattel, Mattel...why do you keep shooting yerself in the foot ? Guess where the new Clawdeen-Howleen two pack showed up yesterday ? If you guessed Argos in England, step up and get a sticker. I have no idea why they wanna send hotly anticipated toys overseas first, but they've done it several times now. Heck, if it weren't for Presto, I'd yet to see a real-life Sweet 1600 Clawd or Cupid, and evidently both are more easily available overseas than here.

I don't even want the dolls. Them or the were-cat twins, they're just not my bag. But I worry when the company who makes the toys I really like seems intent on teasing a very loyal customer base which may one day turn on them, and that's the end of that line. Ah, well. Life in the fan lane...

I'm determined to enjoy what I already have, especially when I find little things, like outfits and props for a buck or three on eBay. Scored this cute outfit a couple days ago, it arrived today, and since my original Lagoona hadn't gotten to model yet, I put it on her. This is one of the Create A Monster outfits from the Vampire / Sea Monster set, I just removed the 'Golden Snitch' decoration from the bodice. If Lagoona wanted, she could wear it as a wider-than-her-hand ring to the next Harry Potter fan club meeting.

I'm still plotting what to sew for Cupid's first new outfit. I've seen her model several DracuLaura outfits, and she's adorable in both the Sweet 1600 fluffy dress and the Newspaper Club set. So I'm thinking of something sort of 50s-ish, if I can find a suitable pattern...or fiddle with making my own. I've always thought that all you really need is one good bodice that fits - then you can sew any number of dresses, skirts, blouses, etc.

Beloved Hubby likes Cupid, too. He hopes we'll have some time Saturday to hop up to Hobby Lobby, and select a paint for her lips. I really can't wait for that ! I've been surprised by how much I like her, even though she's more accessory-lean than the least expensive swimsuit dolls. She comes with her purse, a bubblegum-pink stand, and a trading card with her 'bio' on the back. That's it. Not even a brush ! Not that I need any more of those things, but it was kind of a surprise that she was the first no-brush doll. I mean, she already didn't have a diary or a pet - and her price is the same as what Mal-Wart charges for any other Sweet 1600 doll, and they come with an extra outfit, keychain, and props.

But I'm glad to have her. She's really amazing, and the things I thought I didn't like about her - the black-to-white gradient, the embossed 'lace' design on her arms and legs - have grown on me, very much. I'm still kinda 'meh' on Spectra, but I'm taking a second look at Operetta these days ! Her facial 'scarring' was a bit jarring, but it is quite lovely, and I adore her hair. Still haven't made up my mind yet, though...

Lagoona says, "Hi !"

Current Mood : Sunny, with chance of shrug.

Finally, 'After School' Lagoona gets something new to wear. You remember this lovely, she's the one I agonized over getting or not for weeks, because I wanted her 'hang loose' hand and clothing - but mostly those awesome, memory-triggering pink jelly shoes. I caved when the online Mattel store had her for 20% off with free shipping - and, beautiful as she is, she and I simply never really bonded. It's embarrassing to admit, but this is the first time she's worn anything except what a Mattel employee put on her. (cringe) Sewed this one up today, and hope to attempt a matching shrug later tonight. After sitting on it for two or more years, I am in a massive hurry to use up that Dollar Tree hat I'm using for fabric on these.

And I'm still not sure those colors suit her, but I think she looked great today out in the waning sunlight. The breeze really played with her hair, that's why one part's going one way, and another lock is going another. This underwater sensation will soon swim her way through a cardboard box ocean to get to her new home with DIsArmyWife. She and I are in deep, secret negotiations long into the night, involving lockers, Lagoona, and Fimo food. We're trying to avoid Sicilians, death on the line, and land wars in Asia. I've heard they're not good.

It's been more fun than I thought to play with her. The slight dent just past her hairline before her neck joint has eased out - I can only barely remember where it was. Oh, and she does have her leg fins - I forgot to put 'em back on for the photo. Hadda take 'em off to remove her original outfit. Her 'skin' has a really pearly sheen to it that you can't really see through the fishnet elements of her original wear, especially on her legs. What'cha think, DIsArmyWife ?

This dress looks a bit better than Cleo's because I took it in a bit at the top - and altered then scanned the 'new' pattern for the next one - and hand-sewed the hems at the top and bottom. The other two don't really have bottom hems. I  mostly stitched them with a zig-zag, trying to 'lettuce edge' them, and forgot that those need to be steamed with an iron to really ruffle up. So next time I break out the iron, I hope I remember to save some steam for these.

Another thing I forgot - UncleIL came home the same night of the accident, the hospital didn't admit him. Had some serious bruises on his knees, shin, and chest, and he ached all over, but nothing was broken, thank Everything. Insurance agents have already begun the voodoo they do, and we're all hoping things go well there. His car is a total write-off, the dash is bent up, it was leaking all kindsa fluids after impact, and all but one of the airbags deployed, which means it's a salvage-only title here, at best. He's got a few days to retrieve the last of his personal items, then insurance takes the poor wreck away. Sad, 'cause he really did love that car, even if the payments were less than cuddly. He thanks everyone for their kind wishes.

Well, I'm gonna go try that shrug. Wish me luck, ya'll !

Party Day Saturday !

Current Mood : Celebratory !

Song You Forgot : Silent Running, Mike & The Mechanics

We're celebrating today mostly by sleeping - Beloved Hubby's accelerated class finished yesterday with the presentations, and oh, did he have his 'A' ! He really busted butt, and we're all so proud of him. I let him sleep most of the day, and surprisingly, Dearest Son ended up crashing with him. In fact, I was the only one awake this afternoon for several hours.

I got quite a bit done, and enjoyed myself. Yesterday, while I was cleaning up, I cut up the quite battered and almost unrecognizably altered copy of the NG Creations dress and cut one out of the star field fabric still lingering on my cutting mat. This one would have a v-neck and slightly shorter sleeves - but instead of just hemming, the sleeves would have cuffs of ribbon, and the neckline would boast a small collar of the same ribbon. Heck, I could even add a strip to the hem.

So I did. Wasn't easy. Oh, the cuffs and hemline were easy-peasy, but that neckline didn't go right, and even now doesn't look that good. I think next time I'll use half-inch ribbon instead of a five-eighths. It won't fix much - the problem was my lack of skills in sewing ribbon - but it should look better. At least my back closures are looking much better these days ! Found a spool of black thread I forgot I had and used it instead of the new cone we bought Wednesday. Oh, that's right. I forgot to tell you about that....

In my eagerness to prowl Hancock Fabrics, but not buy anything but thread, I grabbed the first one in the display bin - they keep several sizes of that brand's cone in there, and they all looked black to me. I just made sure I had the right size (i.e., cost) one. Should have looked at the label. Turns out I got 'Graphite', a very dark grey. Not black. ARrrgh. I have no idea when we'll be going back there, so I don't know if I should wait and exchange it - I haven't opened the plastic yet - or just use it and hope for the best. Holding the cone next to the black spool isn't much help. I'll probably tuck it away and hope, but I still feel so darn stupid.

I've been warned off using cone 'serger' thread for sewing. I've heard it's both thicker and thinner than regular polyester thread, and either way, it won't stand up as well. But here's the deal - I mostly make doll clothes. And I've yet to have any of them completely fall apart on me. Even the really early crappy ones are still intact. Still, though, I'll do some stress tests when I get it sorted out. Just in case. If I can't tear it up, I'll give it to Dearest. If he can't tear it up, then I'll know it's darn near impossible to do so, no matter what thread I use. For the record, I got told the same thing about wooden-spool thread, and I wear clothes made with that stuff at least once a month...and I haven't made 'people clothes' in years !

DFIL went through his wardrobe this week, and gave me a basketload of discarded shirts for me to do with as I pleased. Since none were good for donations - like us, when he's done with clothes, the clothes are done for ! - I isolated four I wanted for fabric and cut them apart first. And then I went after the rest. When the dust settled, I had four bundles of new-to-me material, eight sets of button-bundles for the button jar, and two brick-ramen boxes heaped full of scrap rag fabric. DFIL approved.

Oh, and keep your eyes peeled ! I've seen several packages of Monster High Valentine's Day cards on eBay ! Some are clearly home-crafted, but at least two were commercially produced lenticular ones - you know, the ones that change pictures when you move 'em around ? And if they're there, you know they're in stores somewhere. Happy hunting - and let me know where you found 'em ! Our Dollar General didn't have 'em, that much I can tell ya.

More boring week - hope yours is more fun !

Current Mood : Lazy and relaxed

Current Image Notes : Lagoona is quite fond of the carousel music box DMIL sent via Beloved Hubby, so I'd have something pretty to look at in the hospital. How thoughtful !

Had to do some quick housework this morning - the oxygen company was coming by to get me (giggle) fresh air. Actually, they have me on a route, every month they take away the used tanks and get me fresh ones, ask if there's any issues or concerns. I wanted to make sure our room was nice and clean, and I know it needed sweeping. So I got it done. They came by mid-afternoon, and took care of everything, even testing out the one tank we thought was malfunctioning. Turned out, it was the valve that was messed up, so they put me down for a new one. Now I know it's an OCD - Oxygen Conservation Device - and they're fairly new, so suffer from some shakedown issues. I still had an old-style valve, so that'd do for now. Only real difference is the older ones go through oxygen faster. But, truth be told, I didn't even use three of my nine tanks.

The house oxygen device - the one that pulls O2 out of the air - gets a lot more use, but I take a tank along whenever I'll be out of the house for more than an hour. We often take two of the three-hour tanks when we have a VA hospital visit ! Just in case.

So that was the big excitement today. Well, not really. Beloved Hubby was home early, and we ended up at TRU again. Nothing new. (sigh) He found a blue MH headband, though, with a skullie / diamond print and a zipper bow, and insisted on getting it for me. It's really cute, but I could only stand a few hours of wearing it and the oxygen tube before my behind-the-ears space started to hurt a bit. Hope I can stretch it out a little from time to time.

He also moved the back porch boxes into a storage shed today, after shuffling some stuff to make more space. My jewelry armoire came inside, after being on the porch until yesterday, so today I did some shuffling of my own in our room for it. Now I can really dig through it !

But it'll have to wait. I have a Halloween costume to make - Tom, of Tom and Jerry fame - and bags to make for the VA, before my next appointment. I need to start sewing, and now !

I got out of the house today...and was soooo glad to get back home !

Current Mood : Wiped out

Very busy day today. Beloved Hubby finally got a photo he wants to paint enlarged, and put on the first coat of paint to the sincerely ugly kitchen cabinets. It'll need at least a second, if not a third coat, and that's after he sanded off various crud and paint drips from at least two other paintings (that were both done by drunk monkeys, from the looks of them, and both in the same hideous crap brown).

The kids across the street, who were either gone most of the summer or ignored Dearest Son when they were home, are evidently bored, because they pretty much came over every time the doors were open. I was down for a nap the first time, and didn't know, so I was lucky I didn't surprise anyone (it was hot in our room, and I'd stripped down). Ended up feeling trapped in our bedroom for three hours, but hey, at least I got some rest and reading in.

There's three kids, and they're all pretty good younglings, but the little girl, K., kinda gets on my nerves. Last time she came by, she just walked in and pulled all my Monster High dolls down while Beloved and I were at her house talking with her parents, just sort of hanging out. When we returned, all the dolls were in a pile, half-dressed, arms and hands pulled out (they're designed to do that, but the ball and socket break easily), hair and shoes everywhere. And I had no idea she was even in our house ! I've since been sort of wary of her... today, I could barely sit without her there, asking when I'd get the rest of the dolls down for her. She'd already helped herself to the ones she could reach while I was still in our bedroom.

Beloved was also getting a bit annoyed at his limited Dearest-free art time getting constantly interrupted, so we left for a little shopping. I was a little nervous, since I just discovered this week - I'm not having asthma attacks still. I'm that seriously winded walking from one end of the house to the other ! So I unashamedly took the wheel-cart at Hobby Lobby, but arranged things so my leg bandages showed, since I am still petty. Beloved was more than happy to push me around ! All I bought was a new green seam ripper, since he stole my last new one to use as an awl, but it was fun to get out and look around from a new angle.

Dollar Tree, which does not have 'fat-azz' carts of any kind, darn near killed me. But again, I toughed it out, got two new books I'll tell you more about when I've read a few pages, and some hard candy. Not a bad visit, the problem was the cash. Someone in front of us bought over a hundred bucks worth of stuff, mostly cleaning chemicals, and then her out-of-state paper check wouldn't go through. We would have jumped registers, but it was the only one open. On the fifth try, manually keying it in, it was finally accepted. Never thought I'd see anyone spend three digits and change at a DTree.

Plus I sorta needed the hard candy. Forgot to mention, when I woke up from my too-short nap, I had raging heartburn. I haven't had that since I was expecting Dearest ! And this was painful. I tried some hard candy, lots of water, deep-breathing exercises, and going back to sleep, but none of that worked.

Once I had access to the computer, I looked up other home remedies. Ate ginger, ate celery, ate honey, drank pickle juice, drank lemon juice, ate a couple crackers, had a salad for an early dinner. And still had that twisty feeling in my throat. At least the 'burning esophagus' feeling was gone, and it was just the throat part lingering. Beloved bought me Tums, and goss, are those awful, and I still went to bed with my throat reminding me that yes, things can always get worse.

Woke up with the same, ate another Tums with breakfast, spaced out the prescriptions I'm taking, especially these six antibiotics a day (four of one, two of another). I hate to say it, but the only thing that worked was that I threw up. I let out a belch that's still echoing in the back of the house.

Here's hoping the 'workout' lets me sleep tonight ! I really need to walk more...

Hangin' with Lagoona...all four of 'em !

Current Mood : Still slightly ill...

That's my new Lagoona ! Funny how I've gone from one in 2010 to four in 2011. Mattel didn't even offer a second Lagoona until this year, and then, like with Ghoulia, they really pulled out all the stops ! I'm relieved - no more hunting, or hoping. All I want are the new clothing packs, and if the Fear Uniforms are any indication, once they're in stock, they're around for a while. Folks are still payin' $20. for 'em on eBay, but they're not me. If retail is eight bucks, that's what I'm gonna try to pay - unless I can get it for less ! Beloved Hubby doesn't mind paying a bit extra for shipping, since it probably costs less than the diesel it takes to tour Target and TRU hunting for stuff !

Today was...not good. Oh, it was still lovely outside, and we're going on nearly a week with no air conditioning (which is great, since our last bill was outrageous !), but I woke up feeling like aquarium crud and afraid to eat anything, lest it get worse. So I ate a baked potato...and it got worse. I think maybe two hours' spacing may not be enough for all these antibiotics I'm on, so I'll try to allow more time in between them. After all, it says right on the pharmacy sheets what they can do to me, and I know they ain't lyin' !

As a result, I wasn't in much of a mood to sew or even watch Netflix today. I figured I could let my fingers rest up for a little while, pick up the next project tomorrow. So I salvaged a belt from a pair of Barbie pants and a buckle from a damaged Barbie jumper, and put those away.

Beloved came home with a deli ring of multi-colored Jell-o, which I ate about half of - it was perfect ! Cool and delicious, and unlikely to do anything else to my screwed-up stomach. He opted for a melon, so we both ate light for dinner. I'm about ready for bed already - and I'm hoping for kind dreams, for all of us !

With this scan, you could probably make your own bookmarks...

Current Mood : Just plain sleepy !

Mentioned on Flickr that Lagoona 2.0 arrived yesterday with a little plastic bookmark loose in her package. Odd, I hadn't heard about that from anyone else - must be new. It's certainly cute enough, and a neat ad for the novels. The middle 'coffin' shape is detached to form a sort of clip over the page, and I can tell you, the little 'skullie' peeking over the pages is adorable. Evidently not many have seen it yet, so it's today's image, even though I have a new photo of Lagoona 2.0 herself, as well as revamped Barbie fashion images from yesterday and today. It's nice to have the photos ready to go !

I'm sort of proud of today's Barbie retrofitting, sort of not. I actually got on the sewing machine today, but 'KJ' and I are still finding our happy place again. Forgot to change the foot from straight to zig-zag when I dialed up a zig-zag stitch, so I broke that poor needle. The thin, costume-y fabric didn't wanna sew anyway, so today's effort is a perishing mess in the back, but it looks OK in the front. Basically, what I did was flatten out two skirts from the 'Sassy' Fashionista Barbie that was out a couple years ago - those little shiny bubble ones - and sew them together. With Velcro and a bit of stretch at the top, the skirts are now either a short dress or a skirt, and it's pretty cute. You'll get that photo soon !

I had some excitement today - a little sparrow flew in for a few seconds, with two yowling cats hot on his claw-heels. DC and Oliver were going nutz ! I was amazed they could yowl at all, drooling as hard as they were. They chased him right out the front door, so by the time I realized there was a bird in the living room, there wasn't.

Other than that, it was a kind of quiet day. Fell asleep on the sofa a couple times, but only for a few seconds. I'm really looking forward to a good night's sleep tonight, I'm still waking up every few hours because I bumped my leg, or had a cramp or something. But several spots on my spa leg have healed completely, and my therapy one is slowly but surely coming along. Got an appointment with my usual practitioner on Tuesday, and I hope to have some real improvement to show off by then !

Well, time to scrounge up some dinner ! Hope your Wednesday was easy and got you looking forward to the weekend !

Mine ! Mine, mine, mine, mine...(like the seagulls in Finding Nemo !)

Current Mood : Happily sleepy.

Another gloriously nice day. But most folk had to go back to work or school, so it wasn't so busy outside, but it was a beautiful day. By 9:30am, both Beloved Hubby and Dearest Son had gone, so it was quiet, too. So quiet that I ended up sweeping out from under the sofa after I dropped a pill, and did my Barbie-revamp sewing for the MH dolls really early. Watched silly movies on Netflix, and polished off leftovers. Not an exceptional day, but a nice one.

I forgot that hand-sewing does require some finger toughness that I lack. No worries, it's coming back. Straight sewing or button replacement probably doesn't need much fingertip pressure, but stabbing through two thicknesses of fabric and one of plastic Velcro (tm) does. I have thimbles, but they're kinda useless. Maybe I should look through my stash for sharper needles... Today, 'Home Ick' Frankie Stein got to model a revamped 'My Scene' blouse and possibly a Fashion Fever skirt - you'll get that photo soon, it's all ready to go.

It was kind of funny - as I went to bed last night, I thought of what I'd written, that I'd have all day with my new Lagoona 2.0, since Beloved and Dearest would be out. It didn't occur to me then, but 'all day' might mean 'after 7pm', since that's when we normally get our UPS truck, especially after a holiday back-up. It wasn't that bad today, Lagoona arrived at 5pm, and she's just what I wanted. There were so many changes between the prototype photo and the 'real thing', I was kind of worried. It's also why I didn't want that doll at first, she looked a bit too mature for my liking, and the proto photo didn't have the 'hang loose' hand. All I really wanted when I first saw her were her shoes, and having a similar pair in the late 80s just wasn't enough to justify spending $22.+ for her. Never saw her in stores, so there wasn't regret for not getting her then, but I did go a bit nutz when I saw that hand. It's kind of difficult to get other MH fans to trade you a hand...

But, hey, I got a good sale and now I have a pretty new outfit for the dolls, the miniature jelly shoes memories are made of, and an easily swappable hand that has excellent timing, as right about now, I need to remember to just 'hang loose'. The doll herself, however, has a more 'grownup' look to her face that's almost disdainful. That's waaaay out of character for Lagoona, and not what I like in doll faces in general - the expression showed clearly in the proto photos, another reason I didn't want her originally. So we're not bonding at all. Once I get some photos, I'll probably do a more-or-less permanent hand-swap with her and another Lagoona, re-dress her, and offer her for sale - with a big ole reminder that she's been hand-swapped.

(yawn) Well, all this recovery and doll fun does tire a girl out ! Plus I get to play tomorrow, and spend a bit of time with you, too ! It's so nice to have something to look forward to...

At this rate, my 'alterations' box and my bookcase will be empty before I'm done stinkin' up the sofa !

Current Mood : Sleepily hopeful...

Another day on the sofa. In fact, today was in many ways a lot like yesterday - another gorgeous day, with lots of folks home to enjoy it. Went to turn off the AC, and it was still off from yesterday, which I thought was great. With my legs all wrapped up, I could use with some cooler temperatures !

That said, my far less damaged left leg - which I call my 'spa leg' now, since most of Beloved Hubby's tender ministrations to it feel more like luxury therapy than medical treatments - has healed up enough to use much smaller bandages than what my poor right leg requires. To me, that's great news. Any indication of healing at all is wonderful.

I also discovered that I was doubling up on the wrong medicine. Whoops ! Luckily I caught it after just a day, but that could have been dangerous. I wish they'd written my directions down, but then again, my care is my responsibility, and I knew what they meant even if I recalled the name hazily. Here's hoping being on the right stuff does the job for me !

Going through old doll magazines again - which really means I'm reading through 'em for fun. I ditched about 75% of 'em when we moved here, so it stands to reason that the ones I kept were special, right ? Well...of the first 15 or so I've read, I'm ditching three. I think I kept most of the very old Miller's issues out of habit more than content. There's some worth having - especially those with patterns and projects - but many of the rest are dedicated to identifying vintage shoes. Since I'm not as full-bore Barbie as I used to be, it's easier to identify the ones that don't 'speak' to me anymore.

I tried like anything to avoid Netflix, and did a great job - it was my guys who turned it on today ! And it wasn't until late afternoon. Nice to see a couple episodes of Psych. Got a two hour nap today because I kept waking up last night. I was wrestling with my blanket (bit chilly last night), and somehow in the fracas, I loosened the bandage on my right leg, the one that needs to stay snug the most. It took me over a half-hour to get it back on right, and even then, it wasn't very comfortable. I was glad when Beloved woke up !

For it being Labor Day, he was pretty active. He painted the bathroom walls, made breakfast and dinner, did my leg treatments, got Dearest Son ready for his grandparents' (which got postponed 'til tomorrow), did dishes with Dearest, changed oil on the Diesel, helped Dearest bathe Oliver-kitten, and had a little time for his art and a nap, just not much. And he's back to work tomorrow. My busy guy - at least I was able to fold laundry and get it put away today !

I ended up rather regretting that nap, since it took away daylight that I should have used on the Barbie clothes resizing efforts. By the time I got Lagoona's 'Tribute to the 80s' done, it was pretty dark and I had some eyestrain. But that's two more pieces out of the Whitman's box and into the Monster High one.

I'm excited about tomorrow. Lagoona 2.0 is due ! Actually, she's been sitting in a delivery truck since Friday afternoon. Holiday hours, donchaknow. But I'm actually glad it worked out this way, since Friday was a pretty bad day for me, and I'd hate to have my long-awaited doll anywhere near that. Since Dearest is at his grandparents' tomorrow morning, and Beloved will be at work, I'll have all day with her !

Hope you have something special for your tomorrow, too !

I love September !

Current Mood : Excited !

Yaaay, September ! I think things started to turn around when Dearest Son made me that sweet 'Get Well Soon' card last night - but read on and make your own conclusions !

Today started off great - I woke up at 2am, kicking off the sheet I'd curled under, and found that...most of the plasma leaks had stopped ! And the worst spot of the infection had begun to heal itself ! And all I'd done is cover it and go to sleep. Well, if that's all it took to get this fixed up, I can handle it ! Whew. And I'd been in such worry and gloom all week. Grabbed some fruit juice from the fridge and toasted to hope. Then went back to sleep.

I was a little disappointed yesterday when Mattel Store updated their Monster High section, but my sole remaining wish-list doll, 'Lagoona 2.0', wasn't there. Surprise ! She was there today, and thanks to another LiveJournal contributor, I got to use a 15% off code, which made the already lower-than-Target-and-TRU price even lower. So even with shipping, she's less expensive than the other six (!) I got this year.

Beloved Hubby's relieved - no TRU runs this weekend ! And she should be here sometime next Tuesday or Wednesday, she's already shipped ! While I'm curious about Abbey, I'm pretty much done for MH dolls this year. I'm actually gonna start seeking new homes for at least three dolls I already own this month, so it's past time for me to be a bit more selective of what I burn and yearn for. About the only thing left to want - that I know about ! -  are the new fashion packs, and while I'd love all four, if I just got one, I'd be happiest with Ghoulia's. So I think I'm getting better at decreasing my Want.

That said, ya'll are gonna laugh. Late Tuesday night, I was reading a doll blog that mentioned that one of the new Frankie dolls seemed to have new hands. Of course, this was one I've turned down acquiring several times. A couple fans said the hands shown must've been bent in the box, a few murmured they had some like that already, others said they were all-new. Well, darn. I started to Want...but did my research first. Turns out, some of the new dolls have 'Gloom Beach' Frankie's hands - and I already have her ! They're a bit more gently posed than DracuLaura's GB hands, but much the same. How funny ! I was all set to start hunting for 'the one that got away' when it turned out, I already had her !

It was so gorgeous this morning that we opened the doors and turned off the air conditioning. Oliver-kitten saw this as his perfect chance to go exploring, and he's been in and out, along with DC, several times. We finally had to turn the AC back on at noon, but the kitties wanted to stay outside, so we're keeping our eyes open for them. Dearest Son's very worried, but is starting to accept that this is best for everyone.

Wow. I hope your September started well, too ! I feel like my 'hope' supplies just trebled !

Because three Lagoona Blues aren't enough when there's a fourth with a new hand-mold !

Current Mood : Slight longing...

There's the Lagoona doll I really want. I am in love with her hands and outfit, which drives me crazy when I already have two new Lagoonas in the house - I don't need a third for frivolous bits. But I so very much Want ! She's finally listed on the TRU website, but of course, is out of stock. That's fine. We're broke this weekend anyway, and I don't know yet if Beloved's working or not, so it's not an issue either way. I still have to take and edit the photos I have planned - hands, boxes, etc. - and the comparison / contrast for the lab jackets that keeps getting put off, so my weekend's busy even if just do the stuff I promised weeks ago !

And there's plenty of that to get done anytime !

Enjoy what ya got, Dorrie !

Current Mood : Excited

Beloved Hubby sez that we're gonna do a little shopping tomorrow - mostly a 'get out of the house and get a few groceries' sort of thing, more than a 'let's buy fun stuff !' one. That's fine with me - I got three brand-new dolls less than three weeks ago, and I haven't even begun to enjoy them yet. And we'll see what pops up when we're out. I had hopes on finding the 'hang loose' (also known as 'Lagoona 2.0') doll, but I've since discovered that, once again, Target's assigned the same stock number to half the MH stock, so the online checker is useless. I can call, but I just did that a couple weeks ago. Maybe next week, I'll see what's out there. For now, I still have plenty to enjoy - and it's already deboxed !

And shoot, to this day, I have still not seen, on retail shelves, either Abbey Bominable or Spectra, so it's doubtful much new is out there. My little doll desert. Kinda ranks when Germany and Scotland Mal-Wart-type shops have more than yer Mal-Wart, Target, and TRUs combined ! But I'm getting used to it. I've amassed quite a bit, imagine what all I'd have if it was all more easily available !

Heck, I haven't even reviewed the lab coats yet. Just today took Lagoona's off for the first time, to get a better look at it. It's very well done - and I'm still planning a more extensive investigation - but on the whole, mine aren't bad at all. In some ways, I kinda prefer mine to the official ones. I'm already itching to make more, and a couple for the guys !

And, thanks to great friends with better vision than mine, I wanna say here and now I was wrong - the new Ghoulia 'Comic Book Club' fashion *does* come with the green glasses. So it's firmly back on my 'search and obtain' list, but I'm still not in much of a hurry. Seems there's more in Germany than there are in the US, and I have a bit of a wait to go. That's fine, by then I may have money again !

Plus, I'm a little scared about tomorrow. Beloved knows I'm still sick. Well...he knows most of it. He's got a lot on his plate, so I haven't been bugging him with the worst of it. How out of breath getting a glass of water can make me, or how folding laundry can take hours. But tomorrow, we're gonna be in and out of stores, and the last thing I want is to use what's non-affectionately known as 'the fat-azz carts' - those little power wheelchairs most department stores make available for customers. The one time I have before, it was right before Dearest Son was born, and I was so out of it, I still can't tell you what store it was from, but I remember the stares. I don't want any more stares. But I want out of the house, and I want to go...argh. Wish me luck !

I gave Dearest a set of the MH  stickers a couple days ago, and it's not 'til today that he used them to decorate one of his remote control cars and one of his non-remote Barbie ones. It's so cute to see the 'shield' one on the door to a racing-legend marked Traxxas. He took it with him to his Grandparents' house this afternoon, now that the weather's cooling a bit. Poor guy wasn't feeling too well either today. I made sure he got lots of rest.

And I'm slowly getting better. Ate some ramen today, which actually tasted decent for the first time in weeks, but my appetite is still shallow. Felt like I had a bit of energy, though, so I see it as a good sign. Even had a sip of RC Cola Wednesday, something I also haven't been near in weeks, and it was good. Only problem was, it's been weeks since I've had caffeine. Was up all that night, processing it, but it was nice to know I could have a sip here and there again.

It's aggravating. I don't know what I 'can' eat or not 'til I try it, and nobody likes cooking a meal he or she ends up not being able to enjoy. I end up asking for nibbles from Dearest's pizza or Beloved Hubby's gyro, only to have to tell them everything but fruit and some sweets still taste like ashes. Adding to the weirdness is that water, simple cold tap water, has never tasted better in my life !

I'm probably losing weight, but I'm about out of energy all the time. Ah, everything has a positive and a negative, all the time.

Is it still Luau season over at Dollar Tree ?

Current Mood : Whirled about

As tight-chested and sleep-deprived as I felt this morning, I'd be happy to report that I got one thing done today - the shelf of refrigerated leftovers, which had grown from one to two, I finally purged and tossed. Some of that stuff was over a week old, and with some duplicate treats, getting more dangerous by the day. But standing up, shuffling around, and digging for the ten minutes it took was a challenge before. For some reason, even though I was weak, I got it done today. What a relief !

But that's not all ! Beloved Hubby's been having trouble getting to sleep, so I decided to change our bedding, get the quilts washed up, aired out, and back on before he got home. Even though it's still much too hot to use them as blankets, instead, we use 'em  as sort of a home-made quilt-top for our plain mattress. Adds extra comfort without too much burrow-heat. Took three loads, but I did it - and did a fourth, for work clothes, too. He was home a bit early, but pretty much nose-dived into bed after handing Dearest Son and I small treats, and he's been there snoring ever since. I even had the towels, our clothes, and the socks put away, too.

Also put the Hydration Station back together, but not without some comedy. I noticed during filming that it had some weird bit of plastic or something in the water chamber, and hoped it'd pour out when it emptied. Nope. There it was, stuck to the dry bottom, unmoving. And everything I could grab that'd fit in the small filling holes - pencils, silverware, torn cardboard - did nothing to dislodge or get it out of there. I figured I'd have to fill it up again and float it out, but I wanted to try one last thing. Grabbed a chopstick I keep for emergencies and wrapped one end in cheap Dollar Tree desk tape, with the semi-sticky side facing out. Kept wrapping until it was a bit longer than needed, and carefully guided it through the larger of the two holes. Where it got stuck several times. Eventually, I got it in there, and it snagged the whatever-it-was perfectly. Yaay ! No more worrying about that. It still has a few wet spots, and I'm not sure if the bottom 'blow holes' are dry or not, so I put it back where it belonged, with the lid off for a couple days.

I was thinking, though...(everybody run !!) Wouldn't it be fun to tint the water in there ? Or add big confetti pieces ? Long as I could get 'em out when the fun was done, adding some plastic spinning hibiscus flowers to Lagoona's bubbles would be so beautiful... If I ever get to a DTree during Luau Season, I'll have to see what they got. Of course, the confetti would probably blow with the bubbles as soon as it's turned on - then hover at the top for the rest of its time in there ! And I can see how glitter - especially that new powdery kind - could completely destroy the HStation. But it's still fun to imagine other things !

My two new Lagoonas !

Current Mood : Relaxed as water...

Beloved Hubby was home today, but he was wiped out to his very core of existence. So Dearest Son and I let him rest all day, and had a quiet afternoon of doing whatever we wanted. Which was mostly Netflix, and dawdling. I got a two-hour nap m'self, which is why I'm awake now. (sigh)

Cleaned out my ramshackle desk while figuring out what to do next, and found a corroded AA battery and one just beginning to form a crust in the top drawer tray. Yikes. It's been so long since I've seen that happen with modern batteries, I forgot that it did. And if there's one thing I've learned, foamy batteries wreck more toys than kids and Moving Day combined, so I was glad these were at least easily disposed of - but it reminded me of the Hydration Station. Those rechargeable batteries in there were nearly dead, and much as I loved it, sitting around with City Of water in it, and dead batteries to run it, probably wasn't gonna help its longevity. So I got it drained while Beloved heroically made a burger run for us, and took the batteries out.

Since I don't know when I'm gonna use it again - the motor is a bit loud for bedside use - I'm gonna let it finish draining and air dry overnight before I put it back, without the 'good' batteries I found in the desk drawer. It still looks great on display completely empty and bubble-free, and I don't want to risk damaging it with the wrong power supply and potentially weird water. It seems so picky to get special water for it, but I may do just that anyway.

Nearly all the books I bought from the thrift are returning there, now that they're read. Ranks that I paid $6. for over a dozen Ann Rice books before realizing I don't really like her style. It's also bad when ya take advantage of 'half off books' day to learn that 12.5c is still too much to pay for The Devil Wears Prada. Coulda dealt with the 'heroine' of Prada if she wasn't so much like the 'villain', even in the opening pages. If you hate the job so much, you roll your eyes like a slot machine at your boss six or more times daily, quit ! You're as much a part of the problem as your 'devil' is.

Lagoona's lovely !

Current Mood : In love with Monster High again

Looked around today, and, while we have two currently-empty plastic drawer sets, we are completely out of plastic shoe boxes. Here's hoping I can fix this at Dollar Tree soon !

Can't lay claim to the drawer sets - they belong to Beloved Hubby's art supplies, most of which are still in the boxes used to move them. I'd take care of it for him, but that stuff's best left to the owner to distribute. And frankly, if I redid his cabinets, I'd to a full clean-out in there,  and who knows what I'd accidentally ditch ! Papers everywhere. Nope, it's best for a happy relationship to continue being a happy relationship, beginning with me staying out of it all ! Sooner or later, he'll get tired of wading through it himself, and take on the challenge of getting it done. I'll stand in a safe zone and hand him trash bags 'til he's finished.

Right now, I'd have to do that sitting. I'm still out of it. WTH ? It was all I could do to get Lagoona out of her plastic prison, and I still needed scissors. Her stand is just a twinge lighter than Frankie's, which is a bit sad. I was hoping for blue and turquoise, instead of blue and slightly darker blue. But heck, they're both that translucent I like, so it's still a 'win' all around !

And I am in love with her little 'bro' frog. The sculptor did a fantastic job on him, and the 'glass' jar he resides in. Lid fits and everything, and there's a skullie design molded into it. Wow. My favorite, though, has to be the slightly cracked gargoyle egg, adorably reflective of 'Hatch Me If You Can', a webisode from last December. There's a second outfit - you get a photo of it soon ! - and a notebook and pen for Lagoona, too. Lots of great props in the Locker series. Wouldn't surprise me if this line is the best seller of 2011, due to the fun accessories included !

Some fans are mixed about her shoes. Many are planning on cutting the leg-wrapping lace, but I sort of like it. It brings out her leg fins - which surprise me too, since both Locker and Hydration Station's fins stay in much better than my originals' ever did. A closer look shows they're engineered to only fit in one way now, and the pegs have been redone. Very nice.

It's funny how we're always happy when it seems like Mattel is listening to us. At the same time, though, I can't help but feel a little creeped out about it....
