Even after 48 years on Earth, I still don't handle disappointment well, not at all.

Well. Three guesses who isn’t getting a shiny new pacemaker next week ? If you guessed it’s me, then you deserve the huge cookie I wish I could send you. It’d make me feel better if I could. I spent all week scared to death that my cold would make them cancel the surgery, so I’ve been resting and crap instead of busting butt like I should have, sick or not – and as I’m walkin’ out of the VA from all three of today’s appointments, I get a call. They forgot to schedule me for a very important test, and it has to happen before the surgery. So Doc put in a request for the test, and if I haven’t heard from them about it by next Friday, I have to call them, remind them again to schedule it. They’ve already cancelled the surgery. No telling when 1) the test will be or 2) when the pacemaker implant will be rescheduled. Hoping for March or earlier.

I was actually getting rather excited about it, I’m sure you can’t tell. (deep breath) It’s probably for the best, and I did get some good news. One, the cold isn’t an issue, they can barely hear it in me. So, it hasn’t settled in my lungs or anything dangerous. I was feeling better for a reason ! (grin) Two, my heart is quite stable in its current state. There’s even been some very minor improvement, surprising since it’s only been two months since the last EKG. Three, I don’t need the second lead. Some pacemakers have one lead, there to establish the rhythm in the right atrium, usually. That’s often plenty. Others have two, one for the atrium, one for the ventricle. I was right on the line for getting a two-lead, but recent other tests have revealed my ventricle spacing has visibly improved, so I don’t need it. There’s even a three-lead pacemaker, but I was never in the running for it, so we’re not gonna discuss that one. Even on the tail end of a vicious cold, I’m actually a bit healthier now than I was a couple months back ! Gee, what else has changed for the better in the past couple months… hmm…

For the truly curious, I’ll leave this right here. It’s a video showing what a pacemaker does, how it’s implanted, and how it helps. It’s computer animated, reminiscent of color science films from high school, so it shouldn’t squick any but the most squeamish of us. Dearest Son actually wanted to see it – he went with me today – and was impressed at his momma’s future Borg status. (sigh) Whenever it happens. BTW, he was awesome. It was almost as fun as shopping, but the fifth waiting room we got stuffed in, it was starting to get a bit old. In the end, we saw seven waiting rooms for three appointments. Why ? Haven’t a clue. Just went where they told us. And also on the plus side, we were off the highway and local thoroughfares before Rush Hour. Best part of the whole day, excepting the free roast beef sandwich from Arby’s. Joined their FB group, got a coupon, enjoyed a late lunch there. Yum.

Anyway, I also got a test to run tonight that was ordered when my oxygen subscription was about to run out… back in mid-November. Oxygen’s been gone since early December. (sigh) But we’ll run it and mail it back tomorrow. Don’t get me wrong, the VA is taking excellent care of me. But some of this ‘oh. we forgot about you. again. ’ (expletive deleted) gets to me after a while. And I made someone’s day when I told them Finding Dory is, in fact, an actual Pixar movie due for release this year. And Ellen is still Dory. Hm. I need to see if that release date’s changed at all…

Learned a couple other things. One, Emmy-car will do 80mph if I ask her to. Darn trucker. ‘Nuff said. Two, asking the security officer in the booth where parking may be found is a good idea. He told me where he saw people leaving from, and bingo ! Two spots fairly close that I didn’t even have to circle for. A trick worth keeping. And I lost a pound and a half over the last two days. Not sure how, but if it weren’t for the coughing and phlegm, I’d wish this cold – or at least it’s appetite suppressant power these past couple of days – would stick around. Maybe corn flakes for supper is a secret fat burner or somesuch ?

Not dead yet. Not sure if getting better...

Still feel awful, but it’s a slightly better form of awful… I’m not coughing as much, and not eliminating quite as much gunk. I may actually be on the rebound, thank Everything. Especially now that Dearest Son is starting to sniffle.

At least the kitchen didn’t get too bad during my neglectful exhaustion. Beloved Hubby brought home groceries, so we attacked various cereals and milk for dinner. No one was really hungry for anything else, even though I offered. Thoroughly enjoyed my two bowls of corn flakes, and washed up everyone’s favorite bowl for breakfast tomorrow when I cleaned up. Hey, if I can keep the kitchen more-or-less clean enough to cook in even when I’m too sick and weary to cook, that means I can do it any time, from now on.

Wish I had stock in Kleenex...atchhoo !

What the washed Frozen  'Magic Towel' looks like.
A washcloth.
You're welcome.
I swear, if I cough and leak one more time, or go through one more tissue, I’m gonna howl. Going back to bed, wishing for a home IV and catheter combination. Ugh.

A mild funny from the sick.

Darn sick. Sleeping like a slug. Here’s something I saw before I spun in. I hope it works out for them. Enjoy.

Dollar Tree, bringer of light...well, cheap, small light.

Still a bit down, I’m hoping it’s the lack of sun these past couple of days. My cold’s gotten a bit worse, and for the first time since I got put on Symbicort, had to use the inhaler when I went to get my hold book from the Library. I was wheezing and getting a bit light-headed, but the rescue inhaler got me safely home.

Luckily, I was restless before, much earlier, and decided to visit Dollar Tree with Dearest Son – good thing I checked our bank balance first. Last night’s cash deposit was nowhere to be seen. Weird, it was there last night. I refreshed a couple times, nothing changed. Well, we now bounced a $3. Sevvy run thanks to no deposit, but that was all. So I called, grateful I had the deposit receipt – it was put down to a ‘transfer glitch’, whatever that means, and the money’s there now, but they’re still showing us in the red for that one withdrawal. Hope that gets fixed in the overnights, we are not paying a $17. NSF fee due to their error.

So we went to DTree while Beloved Hubby took an afternoon nap – I got a few things we needed, and a couple snacks we didn’t. You can see the adorable miniature lamp I got for the DP&M girls. It comes with batteries and really works ! Not a lot of light, but I’m still impressed. Also comes in red and blue. A bit too big for Barbie-size dolls, but with some perspective tricks (like putting it on the far side of the doll’s desk), you could probably make it work in photos. Wish they’d had a white one. Even though all the tech is in the head of the lamp, the base is weighted so it doesn’t tip over. Cool !

If you look over Elsa’s shoulder, you can see the ‘Magic Towel’ I also snagged. If you’re unfamiliar with those, ‘Magic Towel’ really should be ‘Magic Washcloth’, they’re quite small. But hey, even a thin, scratchy washcloth with a licensed character on it for just a buck isn’t gonna be bath sheet sized. This is the first one I’ve seen that wasn’t Anna or Olaf only. If there was an Elsa solo one, it’s long been picked out.

I’m glitching on the embroidery machine, just flat-out locking up going near it again, even though I know darn well the only thing stopping me is me. I hope to just get over it tonight, because I snagged four gorgeous new designs, and only had to pay a couple bucks combined for two of ‘em.

I think January is shaping up to be 'no picture' month.

I wish I knew what’s wrong with me. Gained four and a half pounds last night, somehow, and that seemed to set the theme of the day. Even though Beloved Hubby told me that Dearest Son and I could go out for lunch, long as I kept to a certain amount, we stayed home. Was tempted to text him after lunch to come home soon, we’re out of leftovers. Instead, because Netflix is due to snag its monthly fees out of Secondary Checking tomorrow, I went ahead and transferred the amount today, just in case. Oddly, it was only $2. less than my lunch limit.

Then I made the stupid mistake of reading doll blogs owned by people who have no problems at all dropping $72. for an AG doll’s holiday gown and coat. Or $500. for an AG French Bakery just big enough for maybe four dolls to fit inside, if none of ‘em have Texas hair. These weren’t just one-time splurges – nope, these folks barely left their homes without dropping triple digits several times a week on their dolls, and they’re quite happy to show you numerous photos of the store and their buys. Sure, I’m jealous, but… dang. Maybe the economy is improving, but I don’t see any food pantries or shelters closing their doors from lack of customers. I shouldn’t criticize, it’s none of my business, and I know nothing about these people beyond what’s on their blog, but when you’re struggling, it’s hard to see someone spend $70. on dog food. Maybe especially ‘cause while their stuff’s got nothin’ to do with you, it still seems like a swat to the back of the head.

So, yeah, I’ve been kind of down all day. I have a VA appointment Wednesday, sort of a pre-check before the pacemaker surgery on the 22nd, and I’m trying not to think about it so I don’t freak out. I’ve already seen videos on how it’ll be done, and it’s very low-risk, but I’m still scared.

What was I thinking just a minute ago... ? Ahh, I'm sure it wasn't anything good....

I am so not thinking these days. I realized I was eating a lot late at night because it wouldn’t drive up my diabetes numbers – after I take the last finger-stick test of the day, why not live a little ? Well, I never do anything by halves, and it was getting a bit ridiculous. I was starting to think my willpower vanished with the sun, but nope. I want my numbers to look good, especially now that they’re getting reported every day again, so I was saving my salt and sugar feasts ‘til after supper. Might have given me some decent test numbers, but it certainly wasn’t doing my weight loss goals any good !

Although I did lose five pounds over the holidays, getting me to a hard-to-reach mini-goal… I wanna keep the progress going. So now I’m trying my best to just eat at meals, and if I am gonna snack, try raw veggies or small portions. It helps that we can’t go out for chips and such for the next few weeks ! I swear, though, sometime this weekend, I am obtaining and bingeing on some cheese popcorn. So there.

Anyway, continuing on with the ‘not thinking’ leitmotif, I decided to make my knockoff DP&M Elsa doll something just for her. Figured I’d make the simple elastic-waist pants today, and a nice blouse tomorrow. Dug through the ‘recently used’ folder of pattern print-outs, and got a single piece pattern. About halfway through, I thought the pants looked a little small and a little short. Yup. These pants go to the Little Disney Princess dolls, not Disney Princess & Me. They almost fit, just too low in the crotch and capri length. Oh, well. Marked the pattern in red ink and put the new pants in the LDP case. Never did find the pants pattern from Crissy’s McCall’s #2182, so I went through my files. I’d made the pants and kimono-style jacket once before, in white and purple gingham, for Tia.

So I was really surprised to see my copy of #2182 was missing View C, those very parts. What in the world ? I made this outfit months ago ! Not one to dwell, I downloaded a fresh copy of the pattern from crissyandbeth.com, and printed out just the pieces I needed. Scanned ‘em, so I’d have ‘em next time. And got to work on pants.

One pattern piece pants – or even two piece ones – are very easy, and delightfully fast, and I got those done before supper.
